Here Comes KüBA
Welcome back to Glasgow Street Music!
After a lengthy break from scouring Glasgow’s busiest streets for up-and-coming talent, I simply had to break my hiatus to introduce you to KüBA. Although not quite my usual busking blog subjects, I had the pleasure of discovering this local talent via their video of their latest release 'OvER & OvER' . The band consists of five members, and covers a variety of genres ranging from rock to indie to funk.
You can hear for yourself via KüBA’s Soundcloud, where they have so far released three of their own songs - although there are new tunes coming very soon. To celebrate the release of their newest singles, the band are playing their debut gig at Stereo, Glasgow on the 7th October. They’ll be playing alongside Cloud9ine and The Almonds as support act for headliners Blue Rose - all insanely talented new artists. You can bag yourself a ticket HERE and don’t forget to click the KüBA link when purchasing a ticket.
I had a wee chat with each of KüBA's band members to find out more about this new addition to the Glasgow music scene. Meet KüBA:
KIERAN BROWN, 24
Position: Lead singer and occasional guitarist
From: Dollar, Clackmannanshire
Why KüBA?: Kieran has a love for writing and performing new tunes, and has enjoyed being at the forefront of a number of live performances in the past. His favourite thing about gigging is providing an energetic, memorable experience for his crowd.
Influences: A combination of indie rock bands like Wolf Alice and Royal Blood, as well as RnB artists such as Lianne La Havas and Jungle.
AIDAN CURRAN, 25
Position: Guitarist
From: Glasgow
Why KüBA?: Aidan has always aspired to make music into a career from a young age, particularly writing music and playing guitar. “There’s no better buzz than playing onstage to a crowd of people loving your music”.
Influences: A solid background of blues and rock; Guns N Roses, Thin Lizzy and Hendrix to name but a few artist influences.
ROSS COWAN, 24
Position: Drummer
From: Glasgow
Why KüBA?: Ross learned to play the drums at the beginning of high school and it developed into a passion. Alongside musical endeavours, Ross is an actor who feels at home in front of a crowd. As a natural performer, he feels there is “nothing better than the buzz of a lively audience”.
Influences: Kings Of Leon, Biffy Clyro, Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club.
SANDER ULRICHSEN, 24
Position: Guitarist
From: Born in Oslo, Norway but now lives in Dollar, Clackmannanshire
Why KüBA?: Sander had a keen interest in music from a young age and plays a variety of instruments. He got his brother Finlay involved in learning bass guitar alongside his own guitar playing to allow them to jam together, eventually leading to them joining KüBA.
Influences: Rock and chill rock genres, including artists such as ACDC, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kings Of Leon.
FINLAY ULRICHSEN, 21
Position: Bass Guitarist
From: Born in Oslo, Norway but now lives in Dollar, Clackmannanshire
Why KüBA?: Finlay has always had a fascination with bass, believing that a good bass-line could make or break a song. He recently delved into experimenting with writing and playing his own tunes and wanted to see what could come from a collaboration with other artists.
Influences: Main style influence is funk rock; with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against The Machine being the leading influences in this genre.
If you like what you hear, you can follow KüBA’s upcoming releases and events on their Instagram and Facebook pages. With their own unique sound and authentic, self-written music, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for what KüBA come up with next.
Cheers for reading & don't forget to share!
